The hummingbird clearwing moth and the snowberry clearwing moth both look and act like little hummingbirds. Uncommon enough to be an exciting find, but common enough to be seen most years. I can’t tell the two species apart (both in the genus Hemaris) but that’s ok with me for now.
It seems impolite to mention it, but it’s not inexpensive to keep our fleet of little birdfeeder birds fed.
After waiting for a long time for a warm sunny day that didn’t happen, serviceberry buds decided it’s time to open. Roadsides are now very pretty.
A robin was singing shortly after 4 am this morning, followed soon after by a veery. I’ve read that the timing of bird awakening is correlated to the size of its eye. Big eyed birds are the earliest risers.
As of 11 a.m. this morning, the storm has dumped 26 inches of snow in Dorset.
Now that the garden is planted, it’s time to replant. As usual, some seeds didn’t come up, some little plants have been chopped off by cutworms, and around here root maggots are creaming the brassicas.
Luckily, singing season for the veery lasts a long time. They’re still at it, mostly in the mornings and evenings.
The year of the toad? They seem to be everywhere, all sizes, and now trilling from ponds.
